Calendar of Nude Running Events

Why Do People Run Naked?

People are curious about nudism. However, the nudist philosophy is simple: being nude is natural. Runners have found that nude running gives them a feeling of freedom and exhilaration that cannot be matched in any other way.

Because it's rather difficult for most runners to experience nude running in their normal running environment, many nude runs have been organized across the country. Normally, these runs are held within the perimeters of established nudist resorts and present runners with the opportunity to give nude running a try.

This web page is a compilation of several nude runs I've heard about. I'm currently updating this page to include information for the 2002 calendar year. Please feel free to send e-mail to me with corrections, updates, and additions to the content of this list.

Note: The above graphic with the male and female runners is the logo from the Bare As You Dare Cross-Country 5K which owned by Bluebonnet Naturist Resort. Charles Moss, the owner of Bluebonnet, has granted me special permission to use his logo on this Calendar. This logo is not "public domain" artwork and anyone wishing to use it must contact Bluebonnet to request permission. Thanks for being "socially responsible" netizens.

Fig Leaf Spring 5000 Run/Walk

web page: http://www.hiddenvalley.org/

The first Fig Leaf 5000 was held in the spring of 1997 and grew to over 250 runners by 1998. According to the race coordinator, it became the most talked about run in Atlanta. During 1998, a fall run (Fig Leaf Fall) was added for two reasons. First, there had been a lot of requests from runners that came to the Spring Fig Leaf 5000. Second, at the rate the spring race had been growing, Hidden Valley became concerned about the race getting larger than the resort could comfortably accommodate. Therefore, Hidden Valley now schedules 2 runs per year in order to keep the turn out to under 500 runners.

Hidden Valley is a 100 acre facility with luxury accommodations including motel units, housekeeping uints, full hookup RV sites, camping, tennis, volleyball, schuffleboard, swimming pool, hot tub, solarium, full service restaurant, massage/SPA center, permanant living quarters, clubhouse, trout pond and mile long hiking trail. It is located in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains about 40 miles north of Atlanta. Two streams run through the property, on each side of a valley, that is in the center of the property.

Bay to Breakers

Official BARE-2-BREAKERS web page: http://www.baretobreakers.com
Official Bay to Breakers web page: http://www.baytobreakers.com/

The Bay to Breakers (originally known as the Cross City race) is neither a totally nude event nor is it held in a nudist resort. The Bay to Breakers exists on this list because it has a recognized unofficial "nude division" called the BARE-2-BREAKERS.

The BARE-2-BREAKERS is a group of "uncostumed" (nude) participants within the enormous Bay to Breakers footrace which annually draws about 100,000 participants. All participants either run or walk the event’s 7.46 mile course across the San Francisco peninsula to the Pacific Ocean’s breakers.

The BARE-2-BREAKERS 2002 nude run is being promoted by the independent Bare-2-B Boosters which has been established to provide public service information about the event. The Boosters are supported by the Western Association for Nude Recreation (WANR) and can be reached by e-mail at: wanr@pacificnet.net.

The Examiner Bay to Breakers will be running for the 91st time at 8:00am on the third Sunday in May 2002. The race runs for 7.46 miles from Howard and Spear on the Embarcadero to the Pacific Ocean.

All finishers receive a memento of their achievement and there are prizes for placed runners. July 22nd will be the 5th annual running of the Wreck Beach Bare Buns Run. This was the first event of its type in Canada and is organized by the Wreck Beach Preservation Society on the western edge of the City of Vancouver in Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

The full course of 7 km. is run on tidal sands at low tide. A half course is also available. Due to liability issues, the event is a combination "run/walk" with walking enforced in marked areas deemed "too dangerous to be run" (narrow paths through rock zones, etc.). Remember this event takes place in a public park, not on private land, which makes it unique among North American nude runs.

Dutch Bare Buns Run

Distance: 5K
Date: July 8, 2001
Time: Afternoon
Place: Nude Beach of Zandvoort - near Amsterdam
Phone: 0031 (0)226 454193
E-mail: info@wnn.nu
web page: http://www.wnn.nu/UK/barebunsrun.html

Considering the fact that some 10% of the Dutch population regularly spend time in the nude, on their own or with others, there are an estimated 1.5 million naturists in this country. Those who join or watch out of curiosity not included!

The organization focuses on the fun element, not on competition. There is plenty of time to finish the five-kilometre track, even if you do not run but just walk. Every contestant will receive a pennant afterwards. Those nudists who do want to run the track start earlier than the others and fight for the cup.

The event should not raise too many eyebrows, so the most obvious thing to do was to find a location like a nude beach. We ended up in Zandvoort (popular seaside resort in the north of Holland near Amsterdam ed.). There is a long nude beach in Zandvoort, it has good public transport and the town provides many opportunities for people to spend a day off. Moreover, the local authorities immediately agreed with the plan and promised to give full assistance. On Sunday 8th July in the afternoon the first Dutch Bare Buns Run will be held in Zandvoort. The organization hopes that the initiative will be repeated each year, thus establishing a tradition. Anything the Americans can do, the Dutch can do too!

Laguna del Sol Sun Run

Time: 9:00 AM
Place: Laguna del Sol - Sacramento, California
Phone: (916)687-6550
E-mail: office@lagunadelsol.com
web page: http://www.lagunadelsol.com/

This will be the fourth year in a row that proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Participants are urged to sign up early and get their shirts so they can join the LdS team and wear them to the Sacramento Race For the Cure on Saturday May 12th.

Other Nude Running Events

The above running events are bonafide races where the runners each wear a bib number, official times are recorded, age group awards are presented, etc. However, there are other nude running activities that have been organized just to give participants an opportunity to run in the buff. I was tempted to not include these in this calendar of actual races, however, there has been discussion about these events in rec.running. Therefore, I created this section to allow those who are interested to obtain more information:

Nudefest (formally The Naked Man Fun Run)

The event has since been expanded and now includes a classic car show and wacky tricycle races. DJ music will also be on hand to entertain the crowd. Special Nudefest T-shirts may be ordered by calling the Naturals Club office at 509-927-3860.

Michigan Naked Mile

Note: This is an event for college students seeking a thrill. Unlike the other races listed in this calendar, the Michigan Naked Mile is geared neither toward naturists nor competitive runners.
