NuWD Calls for a Return to Nude Olympics

Posted by: Nudist World Domination HQ 08 June 2000

Today, Nudist World Domination's Director of Athletics, Dr. Jim Nassafee, has issued a call for the International Olympic Committee to return to the original spirit of competitive athletics in the Greek era by designating as many events as possible to be "clothing-optional".

Dr. Nassafee said, "We at NuWD were very happy to see that the Australian Women's Soccer team is setting an excellent example for other teams by coming out strongly in favor of body acceptance."

Earlier this year, the team posed nude for a fund-raising calendar that demonstrated the natural beauty of the athletic form, unspoiled by clothing or sponsor's logos.

"By designating clothing-optional events, the IOC can produce an Olympic competition that is both athleticly and aesthetically pleasing," suggested Nassafee, "not to mention what it would do for the television ratings!"

"In all seriousness, though," he continued, "once the initial sensationalist aspects of a nude olympics passed, people all over the world would see that there's nothing inherently sinful about nudity unless the context is sinful. In the context of an athletic competition, who's thinking about sex? The intensity of the task at hand transcends any of the pre-concieved notions about nudity that are rampant in our society."

This year, the IOC is launching a publicity campaign related to the Olympics entitled "Celebrate Humanity", to highlight the ideals exhibited by athletes in Olympic competition, namely "...excellence in oneself, respect for one another, balance between body and mind, fair-play, and, of course, joy in effort."

"What better celebration of humanity could there be, than a return to a natural, nude, Olympics?" notes Dr. Nassafee. "Imagine a swim meet comprised only of nude participants! No labels, no uniforms, just a speeding mass of humanity united in competition. It would be a beautiful thing, indeed."

Dr. Nassafee admits, "We have to be realistic, as the Sydney games are only three months away. But we'd like to at least see some experimental nude events, leading up to a traditional, fully-nude Olympics when the games return to Athens in 2004."

Dr. Nassafee thinks "the current state of affairs with regards to nudity and athletics is all quite silly when you think about it. The original meaning of 'gymnastics' indicated physical exercises done in the nude, and it's well documented that the Greeks and Romans did just that."

"Somewhere along the line, the prevailing attitude became that we needed to be ashamed of the physical form instead of appreciating it in a natural way," he laments. "Now, after centuries of body-repression, the parts of ourselves that are normally hidden beneath clothing are seen as unhealthy, shameful, or exclusively sexual. How can we celebrate our humanity when we are ashamed of it at the same time?"
